What It Means to Be a Beekeeper: Making a Difference in the World

At Nate’s Hives, we spend a lot of time talking about the purity of our honey and the vast scale of our operations as the largest beekeeper in the U.S. But behind our 120,000 colonies and the relentless quality of Nate’s Honey are the people who make it all possible. This is the first in our new Beekeeper Series, where we take you behind the veil to meet the individuals who trade sleep for stings to ensure our honey stays un-bee-lievable, our food system stays powered and our planet stays healthy.

Being a beekeeper is about far more than just harvesting honey; it is a commitment to global stewardship. We sat down with one of our veteran team members, Alonso, who tends to honey bee hives across the Texas and North Dakota regions.

Through his and our other beekeepers’ insights, we’ve identified five ways beekeepers change the world every day.

1. They Quietly Power Our Food System
Most people enjoy a drizzle of honey on their morning toast without realizing that beekeepers are the silent engines of our global food supply. During peak season (which includes the heavy lifting of pollination and honey pulling), a normal day for our team is anything but average.

“It’s tiring to go in to work at 3:00 a.m. and clock out at 9:00 pm,” Alonso shares. This tireless work facilitates the pollination of one-third of the food we eat. From California almonds to the wildflowers of the Midwest, beekeepers ensure that our survival and food supply remain intact.

2. They Act as Frontline Environmental Stewards
Beekeepers serve as the primary guardians of our natural landscapes, acting as an early warning system for the health of the environment. Because they work so closely with the land, they are the first to identify and combat critical threats such as harmful pesticide exposure and the devastating impact of the Varroa mite.

By managing these risks daily, beekeepers are doing much more than maintaining healthy honey bee hives; they are actively defending the fragile balance of our entire ecosystem against biological and chemical stressors.

3. They Drive Sustainable Innovation
The image of a beekeeper might seem old-fashioned, but the industry has seen massive technological shifts. In the last 10 to 20 years, technology has made it easier to track honey bee hives and yards with precision, while the development of newer honey bee health advancements has made keeping honey bees thriving more effective.

At Nate’s Hives, we leverage these innovations to monitor hive health across the country. This scientific approach ensures that we are not just keeping honey bees healthy but actively advancing the future of sustainable agriculture.

4. They Preserve Biodiversity and Ecosystems
Healthy honey bee colonies support a chain reaction of life. Successful pollination leads to generations of plants, which provide food and habitat for countless other species. Our beekeepers use their superpower of knowing exactly what a honey bee hive needs just by looking at it to ensure these colonies thrive.

“One time I had put in a queen cell and went to check on it after 22 days,” Alonso recalls. “It was full of eggs, and I thought, ‘These are going to be some huge hives.’” Those huge honey bee hives represent millions of tiny workers who go out every day to maintain the biodiversity of our ecosystems.

5. They Build a Culture of Stewardship
Beekeepers have a unique perspective on the connection between humans and nature. They understand that honey bees are sensitive, intuitive creatures. “I don’t know that they recognize people,” Alonso says, “but they can tell when a person is scared of them. You can see the change in their behavior.”

By fostering this deep connection, beekeepers teach us to move with intention and respect for the natural world. They know a colony is happy when the honey bees are calm and stay within the honey bee hive, and they work every day to ensure that peace is maintained.

More than Just Honey
The life of a beekeeper is one of dedication. It’s about the resilience to get back out there at 3:00 a.m. every day, and staying motivated because they know the job they do is important and makes a difference in the world.

As you enjoy your next bottle of Nate’s Honey, remember that it is more than just a sweetener, an all-natural energy boost or a sweet part of your wellness routine. It is a testament to a culture of stewardship that spans generations and is essential biodiversity.

This edition of the Beekeeper Series was inspired by Alonso a dedicated Nate’s Hives team member who has been tending bees from Texas to North Dakota for more 15 years. It is this level of passion and lifelong dedication that goes into every single drop of Nate’s Honey.
